Warm your bones beside the fire.
When carbon is burned efficiently it will not produce smoke but it will actually produce condensation. Health risks associated from burning carbon openly are known as "particle matter pollution" or PM. But there really is nothing like sitting around on a cold winters night sipping coco in front of an open fire to mellow the soul and quiet the mind. But when it comes to heating your dwelling the approach you want to take is mass heating. This is when you actually heat the structure itself and create a radiant heat source that will hold the heat long after the heat source is gone. The best way to accomplish this radiant heat source is through a sub-floor heating system. This is when you have some sort of tube or hosing running under your floor that is then filled with a warm fluid usually a type of Ethylene glycol that circulates throughout the system exchanging heat with the floor which in return warms the house in a nice even matter. Other options are mass heating systems such as rocket stoves that heat up the mass of the structural materiel that is held for longer periods of time or masonry stoves that are usually a mass of stone and brick that is heated by holding the air from the fire in it's mass and there by radiating it into the dwelling. Here are some ideas on how to use wood more efficiently.

Rocket mass heater.
ROCKET STOVES- are a new version on an old idea, also known as a mass heaters because again they heat an object to retain their energy rather then the air around them. Generally this type of stove is made from a cob mixture laid over a series of air ducts that are fed hot air from a central burning barrel that burns its fuel in a swirling air chamber. If this stove is built correctly it will not produce smoke as its exhaust because of it's thorough burning capabilities, moisture and steam are actually the bi-product from this heat exchange, the most import part of this formula is what is called "stack effect". This system is much more efficient then a wood stove or a fireplace and burns less wood as well, It is said to be a 1 to 5 ratio.

KACHELÖFEN-MasonryStove-Hearth
Masonry Stove
The theory behind mass heating, Basically it works like this, if you were to take a rock and put it in a fire for 30 minutes the rock would heat through and become hot as well because you have heated the mass of the object. Now take the rock out of the fire and you will notice that is still hot and it will remain hot for some time because you have heated the molecules in the rock in return causing it to vibrate at a higher rate creating friction and that's all that heat is, friction from molecules moving at a faster rate then there normal rate, just like when you rub your hands together really fast they heat up because of the friction created. So when you heat the molecules of a mass object rather then the air which cools quickly as the other air around moves in you will hold your heat longer and need less fuel to keep it warm. This is what is called radiant heat.
KACHELÖFEN and MasonryStoves are highly efficient wood burning systems. Rather then just burning off the fuel (wood) for immediate residual heat they thoroughly burn the fuel by heating the air so the gas and carbon that escape unburned from fuel are burned as well, offering up a 3-1 more efficiency in the process. Do to their design the heat is captured in the system rather then sent directly out the chimney heating through it's mass to retain the heat for longer periods of time resulting in less fuel needed to heat. Mass heating is highly efficient and less pollutive to the environment because of the full combustion that takes place. These stoves are built with natural heat retaining materials that absorb the heat and release it steadily to the surrounding area. Often ovens are built into the stove for baking bread and other goodies. These systems are now being fitted to boiler systems that are combined with radiant floor heating.
Here is a good link to some of the ridiculously amazing things that can been with these type of stoves. You don't build this stove around your house, you build your house around this stove.

<-VIDEO- you will get the jist of this old-world technique and the use of a KACHELÖFEN as this women makes fresh bread. I can almost taste it as she takes it out of the oven. P.S. Chleb means Bread. You Don't see it in the start but in the end she leaves a little behind, this is a yeast transfer for the next batch.

WOOD GASIFICATATION
Woodchip Gasifier
Wood what? What the H-E- double hockey sticks is he talking about, gas comes from dinosaurs not trees.? I am talking about exactly that, wood gasification and it is exactly like it sounds like it is, gas made from wood and renewable materials such as different types of grasses and other plant matter, this process is also known as BIOMASS-GASIFICATION. When wood and other matter are heated without direct contact from a flame it gives off a gas that would other wise be known as carbon if it was on fire, but through a controlled heating the matter isn't able to become carbon and it is harnessed as gas in the in-between stages from matter to carbon to be used at a latter date and time. This type of gas is not methane, it is a mixture of Hydrogen, Carbon dioxide and Carbon monoxide and is highly flammable or combustible and it is renewable, but on that front what does renewable really mean? If it means from sources that can be regenerated then fossil fuels are renewable as well, we would just have to wait a couple million years to get more oil but it would happen, so rather then calling these types of fuels renewable I think we should call them FASTFUELS or just fastfuel sort of like hitting the drive through for a quick face stuffing as opposed to going inside and sitting down and waiting 3 million years.
